Structure of DExam

The DExam language examination is a system assessing complex knowledge at each level (B1,B2,C1) and consists of oral (A) and written (B) exam parts.
The four basic language skills and the use of English are assessed by the two exam parts. Assessment units are self-contained, skills are separately measured.
Skills measured during the oral (A) part of exam:
  • Listening
  • Speaking
Skills measured during the written (B) part of exam:
  • Reading
  • Writing
The use of English is intentionally assessed within the framework of Reading.

The appearance of the Arts and Science modules is a distinctive characteristic of DExam. These modules are incorporated in the structure of DExam depending on the level of language proficiency and the skill tested.
Candidates at B1 level are expected to be familiar with everyday topics of personal interest. Therefore, B1 level exam does not offer the choice of modules.
At levels B2 and C1 candidates are provided with general and module tasks in varying amounts. The general tasks form a common part of the Arts and Science modules. Although the module tasks are related to candidates' narrower or wider field of interest or study area, they do not measure encyclopedic knowledge.
The proportion and the occurrence of module tasks in the different skills and levels are indicated in the table below. Module tasks are coloured grey.
